Danny Ramadan at VIU Nanaimo
February 6 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
~Event description provided by ROAR~
Reaching Out Assisting Refugees (ROAR) is pleased to present guest speaker Danny Ramadan – novelist, public speaker, columnist, gay refugee activist – at VIU Nanaimo.
Join us for an evening with a new Canadian who speaks passionately about the refugee experience. Danny Ramadan was chosen as a grand marshal of the Vancouver Pride parade (2016), and is well known for his work supporting sexual and gender minority refugees and newcomers.
As well as talking about his personal story and the work he does, Danny will focus on the many challenges facing queer and trans refugees who come to Canada, dismantling the myth that upon arrival all their problems are behind them.
Danny recently published his first novel, The Clothesline Swing, which the Globe and Mail called “sombre, fantastical, violent and tender,” adding that Ramadan’s “English-language debut is a gay son’s conflicted love letter to Syria.” Danny’s book was recently named to the 2018 CBC Canada Reads long-list .
This event is a part of VIU’s Global Citizens Week and organized in collaboration with VIU Positive Space Alliance. Admission is free. Autographed copies of Danny’s book will be available for sale.
